New Year’s Eve in the Desert

in a magical and unforgetable adventure

What better place to celebrate  the opportunity to celebrate this special occasion than in the magic, silence, powerful and breath taking Sahara Desert

Ruta al Sahara has organized an amazing 5 days private tour discovering the Atlas Mountains and the Erg Chebbi Desert. Departure from Marrakech the 29th of December and returning to Marrakech the 2nd January. Crossing the Atlas Mountains and exploring the Dades and Todga Gorges. Discover the desert, riding a camel  and sleeping under the starts in berber haimas.

Day 1

29th December.
Ruta al Sahara’s guide and driver will pick you up at the airport at your time of arrival to drive you to your hotel in Marrakech. Depending on arrival time you will have time to explore the beautiful city, walking the bustling and lively Medina and Souk of Marrakech before having a tipical Moroccan first dinner in Morocco!

Day 2

30th December.
Marrakech – Dades and Todgha Gorges.
The departure from Marrakech will be early morning (7am-8am)  to have time to explore in our way to the Todgha Gorges some amazing monuments and landscapes. On the way we will visit the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, which is a UNESCO world Heritage.You will have lunch in the city before continuing our drive to the Dades Gorges through an incredible road where the old kasbahs and the “monkey fingers” follow the river. A trekking along the canyons and mountains will be available. You will departure to the Todgha Gorges where you will enjoy a  delicious dinner served at your hotel.

Day 3

31st December.
Todgha Gorges – Desert
After your breakfast, depending on the time. you will have some time to explore the Todgha Gorges. You will departure to the desert, Erg Chebbi in the morning. On the road you will have the opportunity to admire the magnificent change in the landscape. You will stop in the beautiful Er Risani, the last city before the desert. Lunch will be served in a traditional restaurant, where you will enjoy a very tipical berber meal. If there is time you can have a walk in Er Risani souk.We continue the road to Merzouga, the village located in the bottom of Erg Chebbi Sahara desert. A few hours before sunset your adventure to the middle of the desert starts with a camels ride. You will enjoy the amazing last sunset of the year between the dunes. For dinner the Berber guides will prepare a typical delicious tajine and after you will enjoy a unforgettable New Year experience with a typical Berber evening, Gnawa Fantasia Music and Djembe playing, with lots of fun and dance. Your haimas will be ready to give you a good night of rest.

Day 4

1st January.
Erg Chebbi Desert
You will wake up the first day of 2017 to see the sunset during your camel ride back to the hotel in Merzouga. Breakfast will be served at the Riad and you will enjoy some free time to relax or explore the little village. Lunch will be served at your Riad, after lunch you will enjoy a amazing 5 hours tour around the desert to discover and explore the fossils and the black stone mines, to get the feeling of the the berber nomads lifestyle while sharing a saharan tea with a berber family, without missing a spiritual music party with the gnawa vibes in Khemlia village. Dinner will be served at riad.

Day 5

2nd January.
Erg Chebbi Desert – Marrakech
We will wake up to watch the sunrise before riding our camels back to our Riad, where we will have breakfast. We will start our trip back to Marrakech, crossing the beautiful High Atlas. You will have a stops to take pictures of the road and for a nice lunch in a typical Moroccan road restaurante. The arrival is expected to be in the evening/night.

New Year’s Eve (31st December) can be also planned in the village at the bottom of the desert with the 5 hours tour through the desert the morning of the 1st of January The camel trekking and night in the middle of the desert will be the afternoon/night of the 1st January.

Marrakech in the 60’s

Beautiful footages of Jemma el Fna square during Market day and the street of the Medina. This short historic documentary presented by British Pathé Pictures portrayed the lifestyle of the “Pearl of the South”, the Red City of Marrakech.

Market day with the exchange of camels and horses, the wood hanging on the streets to dry and the corn sellers that has transport during miles their bags to be sold in Marrakech.

The market was a point of reunion of the population of the surroundings, and sellers came from all over Morocco to sell their products and animals.

A short historic documentary “Marrakech 1960” presented by British Pathé Pictures portrayed the lifestyle of the “Pearl of the South” almost six decades ago.
